DEATH - Mudgee Guardian Monday August 11, 1952

Mrs M. A. Birtles

The death occurred at her home in Mortimer Street this morning of Mrs. Mary Ann Birtles at the advanced age of 85 years. Deceased, who was a member of the pioneer Bagnell family, of Spring Flat Mudgee, resided in the district for practically a lifetime, and was beloved by a partiulcarly wide circle of friends. A grand type of lady, she had a natural inclination to help by every means in her power, those less fortunately situated than herself, and many a suffering soul in this community will have good reason to hold her memory in reverence. For a lengthy period she was associated with her late husband, Mr. James Birtles, in the conduct of the old Inverness Hotel on the Sydney Road, near Mudgee, and there she played the part of hostess with old-time graciosness and hospitality. In all circles she will be greatly missed, and friends will mourn her passing. She is survived by two sons and one daughter, viz; Jack and Stan [Mudgee] and Mrs. R. Cummings [Sydney], and to them is extended deep sympathy. The funeral will take place at 2.30 to-morrow [Tuesday] from St. John's Church of England where she was christened and married, and Rev,. Canon Powell will officiate. The arrangements are in the hands of Mess. Eastaugh and Carroll.
