Maria Parsons, daughter of Richard (Sr.) Parsons and Margaret Payne, was born in Ireland. Her parents and older siblings immigrated from Moate, Ireland to Zanesville, Ohio in 1848.
The following is from p. 177 of the History of Muskingum County. " The principalship of the Third district (of Zanesville) was made vacant in June, 1865, by the promotion of Mr. Wiles was filled
by the election of Miss Maria Parsons, who had been for several years teacher of the senior school in that district. This was the first instance in the history of the Zanesville schools in which a lady was placed in
the responsible position of principal, and the innovation was regarded by many earnest friends of the public schools with serious distrust. At the close of this school year, however, the board of education were so well satisfied with the result of their
experiment that they applied the same policy to the other two districts."
